PwC suggests one in four employees worldwide may consider changing jobs in the next year

PwC released its latest "Hopes and Fears Survey 2023" on June 20th, analysing the attitudes and behaviours of over 50,000 employees from 46 countries and regions, including 1,000 respondents from Hong Kong, between March and May 2023. Despite the ongoing global economic challenges, the phenomenon of the "Great Resignation" continues to ferment worldwide.

Both globally and in Hong Kong, a significant number of employees are planning to change jobs in the coming year. Globally, 26% of employees are likely to switch jobs in the next year, higher than the 19% reported last year. In Hong Kong, the figure is 30%, doubling from 15% last year. Among the global respondents, employees facing excessive work pressure (44%), financial constraints (38%), and those belonging to Gen Z (35%) are the most likely to consider job changes.

In addition to economic pressures, employees' job satisfaction and the ability to express themselves authentically in the workplace are important factors influencing job considerations. Among employees who are likely to change jobs, only 47% are satisfied with their current positions, while among those who are less likely to change jobs, the satisfaction rate reaches 57%. Furthermore, the likelihood of realising one's true self in the workplace is relatively lower among respondents planning to switch jobs.

Mr. Alan Lin, Human Resources Managing Director of PwC Taiwan, pointed out that companies must actively enhance employees' skills and provide more development opportunities to avoid the risk of social polarisation. Employees are not only seeking reasonable compensation but also yearning for greater control over their work and a sense of purpose. Employees with professional skills are often better equipped to manage their work. Therefore, for leaders, it becomes crucial to create teams that can adapt to current and future challenges.
